Davenport's MSIA Degree: Online and On-Target
Davenport University this fall began offering a Master of Science in Information Assurance (MSIA), furthering its leadership role in providing information and network security education in Michigan. Offered through the University’s school of technology, the new program follows the addition last year of a degree in biometric security, which earned national attention. The MSIA is offered online and will also be available at the new Livonia location, which will open in fall 2008.
“This program is another example of our philosophy to emphasize innovation and meet the emerging needs of businesses,” said Reid Gough, dean of the school of technology. “We are becoming widely recognized as a leader in information and network security education, and this program is needed in today’s workplace. Our students don’t just learn the tools and techniques, they apply their knowledge to real-world security problems.”
Davenport University President Randolph Flechsig added, “This program incorporates the experiential learning and the practical application that sets Davenport programs apart from other universities.”
The MSIA degree will equip graduates to minimize risk to an organization’s or individual’s information assets by building secure systems that protect the confidentiality, accessibility and integrity of those assets in today’s global environment. The degree is mapped directly to the key elements of Information Assurance, as defined by the National Security Agency (NSA).
The degree is comprised of seven core courses, two electives and a capstone thesis. The core courses will give students a comprehensive understanding of the issues and challenges associated with securing data, as well as the ethical and legal restrictions that affect societal roles.
“We anticipate most students completing their degree in about 18 months,” noted Gough.
